How to Become an Automotive Technician

Automotive technicians provide repair and maintenance services to vehicles. He/she works at automotive shops, garages or service centers. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. A technician in automotive must be able diagnose and repair problems quickly, safely, accurately, efficiently, and effectively.

A person who wants to work as an automotive technician should first obtain an associate degree from a vocational school. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands to American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two sections to the ASE certification test. The first section tests the ability to use mechanical knowledge. The second section tests the ability to apply practical skills. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. These locations are available online or through your local automotive dealer.

Before becoming an automotive technician, a candidate must pass the test. This process can vary depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require candidates to complete a training program, while others let them study on their own. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. This is when a student can learn how to do basic repairs such as changing oil, adjusting brakes and replacing tires. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Many schools offer classes during regular hours. Some schools also offer evening classes when needed.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen generally spend four- to five decades learning how to fix major systems like transmissions. They learn how to do complex repairs such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissives, and troubleshooting electronic components. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

A candidate who passes all the necessary exams and gets a license might be interested in opening his/her own business. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. When a candidate plans to open his/her own shop he/she should be ready to invest thousands of dollars in equipment.

There are many factors that affect the salary of an automotive technician, such as where they live, their education and experience. An average salary for a jobless individual is $20,000 per annum. Someone with only a high school diploma could earn around $21,000 per year. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with a bachelor’s degree made about $27,000 annually. Master's degree holders make around $32,000 annually. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
