Are you a mechanic or a technician? What about part-time study?

Although a degree is not necessary, it can be helpful. Employers will prefer candidates who have completed a degree. This shows you have put in the work and achieved success.

It doesn't mean that you can't work while you study. Many universities permit students to take courses during the summer holidays, and then finish their studies in the fall. Students can also take classes part time throughout the academic year.

How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

An automotive technician is responsible for vehicle maintenance and repair. He/she can be found at auto shops, garages and service centers. He/she repairs cars, trucks, motorbikes and snowmobiles for customers. A technician in automotive must be able diagnose and repair problems quickly, safely, accurately, efficiently, and effectively.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing this program the student must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence exam (ASE). ASE stands as American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two sections to the ASE certification test. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. You will need to attend an authorized testing site in order to pass the test. You can find these locations online or through your local automobile dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. The process will vary depending on where an applicant lives. Some states require applicants to take a training course while others allow them the freedom to study on their own. Some states allow technicians to become licensed right away after receiving their license. While others wait until they have had at least six years of experience as an automotive technician.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeships last for three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Some students will learn advanced repair techniques, such as changing shocks, installing air filters, and replacing engines. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen generally spend four- to five decades learning how to fix major systems like transmissions. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

After passing the exams, candidates may be eligible to open their own shop if they pass all requirements. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that this number would rise by 18% from 2009 to 2020. If a candidate decides to open his/her own shop, he/she should prepare to invest many thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. A jobless person can expect to make $20,000 per year. A person with only a high-school diploma could make around $21,000 annually. Associate's degrees earn approximately $24,000 per annum. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. The average annual salary for those with master's degrees was $32,000. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
