FAQ

How can I prepare to become a mechanic apprentice?

It is important to have an understanding of what you are going into. You should be familiar with the mechanics of cars, and how they work. You will be able to know exactly where to begin when you arrive at the garage for your first day.

You should also know how to fix common problems such as tires or broken lights.

These lessons will help you to identify and fix problems.

It is also important to know how the different pieces fit together in order to put them together again.

Finally, be proficient in using tools safely and efficiently.

All these things will help you to become a competent mechanic.

Is it worth becoming a mechanic?

The answer depends on what you are looking for in life. If money is your goal, then you can answer "yes". But if you are searching for meaning and purpose, then you should not answer this question.

If you don't have any mechanics skills, then there's no point getting into it because you'll just end up wasting time. You won't become rich from it. It won't make you famous. It is unlikely that you will be made famous.

You would need to spend years learning how to do everything properly. Also, you would need to hire someone else to fix it if it broke down. This is why most people don’t bother. They find something better to do instead.

Summarising, if your goal is to make lots of money, go for it. If you are looking for a fulfilling life, however, then stay clear of the mechanics' industry.

What kind of car mechanic jobs exists?

There are three main areas of employment for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is the place most people begin to consider becoming mechanics. It's actually the easiest way to start. Either you can work in a shop that is owned by another person or start your own business.

If you plan to work in a shop, you must apply to join the union. Once you're accepted into the union, you'll receive training from the union.

After the training, you will be ready to go and start your job.

Registering with the government is required if you intend to open a garage. Once you have registered, certain standards will be enforced.

You will receive a license to run your garage once you have registered.

Your license allows for minor repairs and spare parts sales. It won't allow you to fix major engine problems.

Customers will expect you to not only sell spare parts but also provide advice and guidance.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who can specialize in a particular area of the car. They might be able to only fix brakes or replace tires.

Some dealerships hire general mechanics to handle all aspects of car repair.

These positions may require applicants to complete specific training before being allowed on the job. Employers can then choose the best candidates for their job.

Some dealerships hire students straight out of college. These graduates already have a basic understanding of mechanical engineering, so they are able to learn all about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages do not belong to any dealership. They are more focused on providing top-quality service.

Independent garages don't have to be associated with any particular company. This allows them to offer higher wages. These jobs generally pay better than those at dealerships.

However, independent garages may not be better places to work. Many owners prefer to control their businesses themselves, rather than delegating it to employees.

It is possible to work long hours, but not have any control over the day.

Also, expect to make lower wages than if your job was at a dealership.

There are many jobs that can be switched between. If you want to work at a dealership, then you simply need to ask your current employer if he would consider hiring you as a mechanic instead.

If you prefer to work in an independent garage, you might consider applying directly to its owner.

Finding a new job is not always easy. There are many factors that affect how much you make.

For example, the type of vehicle you repair and whether you charge extra for labor.

How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

An automotive technician is responsible for vehicle maintenance and repair. He/she works at automotive shops, garages or service centers. He/she assists customers in fixing their cars, trucks or motorcycles. An automotive technician must have the ability to quickly diagnose and fix problems.

A person who wants to work as an automotive technician should first obtain an associate degree from a vocational school. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists two sections. The first section tests the ability to use mechanical knowledge. The second section tests the ability to apply practical skills. To take the test, you must visit one of the approved testing locations. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require that applicants attend a training class, while others allow them freedom to study at their own pace. Some states require technicians to be licensed immediately upon receiving their license. Other states wait until they have been employed as automotive technicians for at least six month.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs usually last three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Some students learn how to do advanced repairs, such as installing air filters, replacing shocks, repairing engines, and replacing transmission fluids. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen usually spend four to five year learning how to install major systems like transmissions, differentials steering gear, suspensions, drive shafts, and steering gear. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

Once a candidate passes the required exams and is granted a license, they might consider opening their own shop. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This number was expected increase 18% between 2009 - 2020. A candidate who plans to open a shop should expect to spend many thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. On average, a jobless person could expect to earn $20,000 annually. An individual with a high school diploma can earn about $21,000 per annum. Associate's degrees earn approximately $24,000 per annum. Technicians with a bachelor's degree earn about $27,000 per annum. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
